To Be or Not to Be On TikTok?

‘Should I be on TikTok?’ is a common question asked these days. Although a frequently asked question, it’s not an easy one to answer because it’s not simply a yes or no.

Just because one thing works for someone else, doesn’t mean it will work for another. TikTok has seen a quick rise as a new social media platform, turning into more than simply a place to attempt a trending dance. Although if you do want views more than anything, you’re welcome to give that a shot. In Australia, TikTok has even taken over YouTube in active users. That’s crazy when you consider the powerhouse that YouTube used to be.

But why is TikTok so successful?

Simply put, it’s the algorithm. In the past when the algorithm is mentioned, it’s been all about digital ads but TikTok uses algorithms to instead curate the perfect feed for a user. Unlike other platforms, TikTok isn’t simply servicing the advertiser. This means for creators uploading to the platform,  you don’t need a large number of followers for a video to go viral. This all comes back to the notable ‘for you page.’ If you’ve seen the hashtag ‘#fyp’ that’s what they’re referring to. TikTok takes data of what you like, search and watch to curate the perfect feed for the individual. This makes it easier for creators to not only market to the right people but to gain views fast.

So should you be on TikTok?

It comes down to a number of things. We know there’s a concern that there’s only a young audience on TikTok, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible for an older audience. Also, think long-term and consider brand loyalty because one day the youngin’s will grow up and need real estate services. Even if your TikTok is showing funny sold sticker placement fails like @barryplant.bpd (which got over 1M views) it’s still showcasing the brand and building brand recognition.

If you are going to make an effort to be on TikTok, consider your content. There are 3 easy tricks to remember and potentially get you the views you’re after;

Use Trending Sounds

This is the easiest way to make sure your content is seen is by using trending sounds. These will get pushed onto more feeds than TikTok’s without any sound. When you’re spending too long watching TikTok, be sure to favourite some of the sounds. More often than not, there will be a way for you to apply it.

Create Genuine and Relatable Content

A number of TikTok’s get views because they’re relatable, whether that’s doing a ‘storytime’ of an interesting moment or someone falling over. So think about what entertains you or makes you laugh in your day-to-day job. If it makes you laugh, it’ll make others. Be native to the platform – this means iPhone quality videos are the stock standard rather than high-quality productions.

Be Active

Comment, like and engage with TikTok’s similar to your own! TikTok can’t curate the perfect feed for the potential audience you want to reach without getting data. Engage with the side of TikTok you want to be on so you can help TikTok do its thing faster.
